Zoro tied to a pole, starving, refusing to break. That's all you need to know about this man. The rice ball moment is small and perfect. A legendary introduction for a legendary character.

This was a great episode to properly introduce Zoro, showing how tough he is while also hinting at his good personality. Aside from that, Luffy and Zoro’s interactions were just too entertaining to ignore. Their character dynamics already feel strong and enjoyable to watch.

What a character introduction for Zoro! He really is tough—like really tough. I don’t even know how he managed to survive in that condition. I love this follow-up episode because it not only continues the story well but also introduces another strong and memorable character.

It solidifies the crew’s foundation with a strong introduction to a key ally, blending humor with conviction. The episode emphasizes ideals and loyalty, giving the journey a clearer sense of direction.

Zoro’s intro is honestly really cool, even tied up he feels dangerous, the way he talks and carries himself stands out, and Luffy trusting him so easily feels crazy but also kinda makes sense for his character

zoro's intro hits hard, luffy's reckless confidence is already on full display and you can feel the bond forming even this early, the scene with rika and the onigiri sets up the emotional stakes nicely and it moves at a good pace for a setup episode

Luffy’s reckless optimism clashes with Zoro’s resolve, and the pairing works brilliantly! Themes such as honor, ambition, and most importantly pride are all present in this episode and they dominate the story. Momentum is building slow, deliberate, and unstoppable.

That punch really relieved my pent-up stress! This episode is a rollercoaster of emotions. The innocence, savagery, bravery, cowardice, and charisma of the characters are all perfectly portrayed. Also—funny! Really funny. Luffy, how can you play so dirty? LOL! A great watch!

Episode 2 is really looking very interesting honestly. Zoro showing up crucified is one of the best character entrances i have seen.

The moment Luffy realized that Zoro wasn’t actually a bad guy was so subtle, yet it was definitely there. I really liked that brief moment because it added depth to their characters and showed Luffy’s instincts. It may have been short, but it made their interaction feel more meaningful.

Luffy punching the whale just to start a new rivalry is the most Luffy thing ever and it actually gave Laboon a reason to stop hurting himself

I was not ready for that flashback of baby Laboon waiting for fifty years and it made me feel so bad for the big guy just hitting his head against the wall

The way the old man mentioned Roger at the very end was enough to give anyone chills, because it makes you wonder if Luffy really is the one they are all waiting for

I was so confused when they ended up inside a whale with a whole resort and a painted sky but the story about Laboon waiting for fifty years really got to me and Luffy finding a way to make him stop hurting himself by starting a new rivalry was just such a classic move from him he always knows what to say

Laboon's flashback seriously broke my heart; I just can't believe those pirates actually left him behind for fifty whole years without ever coming back. How could they forget about such a loyal friend like that? It makes me so angry.

That massive whale hitting the wall over and over was actually pretty depressing and having Luffy finally step in to stop the cycle was a big highlight

I couldn't stop laughing when Luffy started fighting the whale just to give it a reason to keep living and that drawing on its head was so bad but also kind of sweet

Crocus is such a weird guy, and that moment when he said he was the one who would die had me laughing way too hard

EPISODE CONTEXT

Directly following Luffy's solo debut in Episode 1, this episode kicks off the crew-building arc that defines early One Piece by introducing Roronoa Zoro, Luffy's first major recruitment target. The Shells Town setting and its corrupt Marine leadership establish the series' recurring theme that authority doesn't equal justice. This episode sets the stage for the confrontation with Captain Morgan and the alliance that will shape Luffy's journey forward.
