Bitterweet describes it well. Just like in Game of Thrones, many perish and chaos takes over in order to resolve the issues. Worth watching, although it's a very strange series.

The anime ended with a very dark but meaningful message about how war destroyed innocence and hope. It was not a happy ending, but it was powerful and unforgettable. Overall good anime to watch.
