Ninja vs. Gokudo
Oshimeter
Synopsis
For 300 years, ninjas and yakuza — two shadowy factions — have been killing each other, and nobody really remembers why anymore. Into this mess walks Shinoha Tanaka, a by-the-book ninja operative, and Kiwami Kimura, a yakuza member with more charm than sense. They meet under circumstances that should end with one of them dead, but instead they realize they actually get along — which is a problem when your entire bloodline is built on hating the other guy's entire bloodline. The first couple episodes set up this unlikely friendship against a backdrop of modern Tokyo, where both factions operate in the shadows with centuries of grudges baked into their DNA. What makes this 12-episode TV series work is the balance between genuinely sharp martial arts choreography and the absurdity of two guys trying to be friends while their respective organizations want them to be enemies. Studio Deen pairs traditional Japanese instrumentation with modern beats in the soundtrack, which gives the fight scenes a distinct flavor. The tone is action-packed but knows when to slow down for character moments and dry humor. If you liked the ninja politics in Shinobi no Ittoki or the odd-couple dynamic in A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof, this hits a similar sweet spot. Fans of Flame of Recca's martial arts energy will find something to latch onto here too. It's a tight watch at 12 episodes — no filler, just two dudes accidentally threatening to upend centuries of tradition.
