Synopsis
Take a ninja academy exclusively for young women, and you get exactly what 'Kunoichi Gakuen Ninpouchou' leans into completely. This 6-episode OVA from 1999 follows Shinobu, a kunoichi-in-training at the Iga Ninja Academy, where students balance ninjutsu drills with the kind of supernatural threats that textbooks definitely don't cover. When her best friend Aya falls victim to a mysterious parasitic bug — one that hijacks its host's will entirely — Shinobu has to figure out a cure before another classmate, Lena, suffers the same fate. The only antidote? Buried inside a rival faction's heavily guarded facility. Classic ninja problem. The setup pulls from real clan rivalry mythology, pitting the Iga against the Koga in ways that feel rooted in actual Japanese folklore, which gives the action sequences more weight than you'd expect from something this campy. The tone swings between genuinely fluid fight choreography and absurdist comedy, sometimes within the same scene. If you've seen 'La Blue Girl' or 'Ninja Nonsense' and appreciated how those series mix martial arts with supernatural chaos, this scratches a similar itch. The parasitic entity mechanic is a surprisingly inventive power system that adds real stakes to an otherwise lighthearted premise. Don't go in expecting deep character development across six episodes — this is a short-form action romp with a specific audience in mind. But if ancient ninja lore, school-setting chaos, and supernatural horror elements sound like your thing, it delivers exactly what it promises.
