Ningyou no Yakata
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Tucked away in the mountains, a wealthy estate becomes the unlikely summer workplace for a guy who finds himself surrounded by elegant women and an atmosphere that feels just slightly off. That's the setup for Ningyou no Yakata, a 2-episode OVA from AIC based on a visual novel. The estate belongs to the Katsuragi family, and for a while it's pretty comfortable — a gracious lady of the house, her daughter, charming maids. Then So stumbles across something in the attic: a dollhouse filled with figures that look eerily like everyone living under the same roof. He figures out that manipulating the dolls affects the real people, and things go in a direction that's dark pretty fast. The supernatural hook is genuinely interesting — there's something unsettling about the idea that control over someone can be that quiet and that complete. The secluded mansion setting does a lot of work here, giving the whole thing a gothic, almost claustrophobic mood that separates it from more straightforward entries in the genre. If you've watched something like Bible Black or Discipline: The Record of a Crusade and appreciated when hentai actually commits to a consistent atmosphere and premise, this scratches a similar itch. It's not a long time investment at two episodes, and the visual novel origins give it more narrative structure than you'd usually expect. Go in knowing what it is, and it delivers on its premise.
