"Angel Attack" is a masterclass in sci-fi world-building. It perfectly balances giant mech spectacle with intense psychological dread. Shinji’s isolation is palpable from frame one. Cinematic, tense, and unforgettable—the ultimate hook for a legendary anime. 10/10

This introduction couldn´t be bettert, it perfectly establishes the complex and adult dynamics between the characters and the huge menace they´ll be facing, at the moment Shinji is forced to get into the EVA to fight the angel you know this isn´t your typical giant robot series.

episode 1 throws you right into the deep end. shinji's a scared kid, his dad's a jerk, and he's forced to pilot a giant robot he's never seen. the monster tanks a nuke and keeps coming. misato's car gets wrecked and she's mad about the payments, and that is peak humor. animation is old but gold. if you like dark mecha stories, jump in.

This first episode really pulled me in😊. It feels heavy right away, not just action but emotion too. I like how it slowly introduces everything without rushing. The main character already feels relatable, and there’s this tension that keeps you curious about what’s coming next🤔

Shinji gets summoned by his dad. giant monster attacks. he refuses to pilot until he sees a bandaged girl wheeled in. the Eva moves on its own to protect him. "I mustn't run away." this premiere is heavy. 😶

I came here from The iconic Anime Song and Make Me Memories Never Forget, and the first episode includes Bio mechanical horror and an elemental dark scene. The character Shinji is my favorite character cause he is brave. By entering the EVA Pilot by his primal instinct

Scary angels aside, the sounds used in this episode reminds me of actual jets, taking in that sense of just how huge Units are. It's like Gundam but it gives off a somber vibe somehow and it gets you curious as to what happened between Shinji and his dad. Classics hit different.

The way Angels are immediately shown on the first episode, displaying the damage that they are capable of, is an effective way of getting me hooked. The reveal of Unit 01 after absolute secrecy makes you wonder just how formidable Angels truly are.

First episode isn’t holding back in hinting how terrifying Angels could be that EVA's had to be made. The sound design and visuals encapsulate how fragile it feels to be of flesh next to a massive creature of monster and steel.

With its gore and destruction, its deep lore, and immediate, palpable tension between Shinji and Gendo, the episode 1 not only telegraphs the broad traumatising and contemplative nature of the show, but also sets the tone for its dark and panicked first third.

Episode one establishes the premise and protagonist through visual storytelling and minimal exposition. Shinji is forced to confront the choice to pilot or retreat, defining his internal conflict. The tense, uncertain tone frames the psychological stakes of the series.

EPISODE CONTEXT

As episode 1 of 26, 'Angel Attack' is pure setup — introducing Shinji, Misato, the enigmatic NERV organization, and the existential threat of the Angels that will drive the entire series. No prior context is needed; this is the entry point. It directly feeds into episode 2, 'The Beast,' which deals with the immediate fallout of Shinji's first encounter and begins deepening the character dynamics established here.
