I actually felt sick watching Gaara stand over Lee like that, especially since Lee is already so broken from the last fight, and seeing Shikamaru and Naruto realize they are way out of their league was such a heavy shift in tone for the show compared to the earlier goofy hospital stuff they were doing with the medicines.
