The studio really does a good job in showing how wild and intense Naruto's state in his fight against Haku. Haku's past is revealed in this episode and why he is loyal to Zabuza. Kakashi's side is also starting to finish up as well.

The scroll's animation was very interesting here, makes you think what else do ninja's use to fight. Despite the dragged pacing, the world-building still goes on steadily

Starting to get annoyed at how they do these flashbacks. The plot is dragging on bc talk no jutsu takes a lot of screentime than the actual events 😵‍💫

Another dialogue-heavy episode but Kakashi's hand was interesting here. The sound design is unique too!

Naruto and Haku’s interaction scene was beautifully portrayed. How Naruto doesn't succumb to his hate is dignified here. The power of conversation is the trait that sets Naruto apart from other series, and it is prevalent here.

I still can't get over that red chakra around Naruto because he looked like a total beast when he caught Haku and I really thought Sasuke was gone for good

Haku wanting to be a tool is so depressing and it makes the whole fight on the bridge feel so much heavier when you see his face under the mask

The sound of those birds from Kakashi's hand was so cool and I was so hyped when the dogs finally pinned Zabuza down in the mist

Haku seeing his own father lead a mob to kill him and his mom was the darkest thing in the show so far and it explains why he clings to Zabuza so hard

Kakashi taking a hit earlier just to get blood on that sword was a big brain move and now Zabuza is totally stuck while that lightning blade builds up

The way the mist starts to clear while Haku tells his story makes the bridge feel so much bigger, and seeing those ninja dogs come out of the ground was such a cool surprise.

naruto going beast mode was scary and that scratchy animation style made the red chakra look so dangerous

You can really see the pain in Naruto when he has to pick up that kunai to kill Haku after hearing about how he was just a lonely orphan in the snow

I felt sick when Haku asked Naruto to kill him because he felt like a broken tool and the mask breaking to show his real face made it so much worse

I really felt for Haku because his dad tried to kill him just for having a bloodline power. It makes me so sad that he thinks he is only a tool and nothing else

Hearing the sound of that lightning blade is so distinct and cool, it really feels like Kakashi is about to end this whole battle once and for all

The whole conversation about being a tool for someone else is so dark and it makes you realize how similar Naruto and Haku actually are and seeing Naruto struggle to kill someone he knows is a good person deep down was the hardest part of the episode to watch because he is still just a kid in a world that wants him to be a weapon

Haku asking to be killed because he failed Zabuza is such a messed up mindset and it shows how much trauma he has dealt with since he was a little boy

It was such a shock when the mask broke, seeing that Haku was just the nice person from the woods made the whole fight feel so personal

My pulse was through the roof when Naruto was growling at the mirrors and his wounds were healing instantly because he looked genuinely dangerous for the first time

EPISODE CONTEXT

Sitting deep in the Land of Waves arc's climax, Episode 17 follows directly from 'The Broken Seal,' where Naruto's unleashed power shifted the battlefield dynamic, and now the focus turns to understanding the enemy across from him. This episode serves as the emotional backbone of the arc's final act, setting up 'The Weapons Known as Shinobi,' which will push the philosophical tensions introduced here toward their conclusion.
