Sasuke must have been floored when Itachi told him *he* should be the one to judge everything Itachi had done; I can't even imagine the weight of that. It's such a heavy request, almost like Itachi needed Sasuke's absolution more than anything else, which kinda makes me wonder if Itachi truly felt he was beyond redemption otherwise.
