Synopsis

When four mutant turtles walk into a shrine and walk out with the ability to transform into armored super-warriors for exactly three minutes, that time limit is doing a lot of work in this story. Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael receive mystical MutaStones from Crys-Mu, a spirit of light, which kick off a power arms race when Shredder finds his own Dark MutaStone and upgrades himself into Devil Shredder — and Bebop and Rocksteady get the same treatment. Everyone gets a glow-up, and chaos follows. This two-episode OVA from 1996 leans hard into Japanese Sentai aesthetics, complete with transformation sequences that feel straight out of Power Rangers or Kamen Rider. If you grew up with those shows, there's something genuinely fun about watching the Turtles get that same treatment. The vibe is action-heavy but never takes itself seriously — it has the same loose, comedic energy the classic TMNT cartoon always carried. If you liked Saint Seiya's dramatic power escalation but want something shorter and goofier, this scratches a similar itch in about 45 minutes total. The soundtrack features Hironobu Kageyama, who voiced Goku's iconic Dragon Ball Z themes, which gives the whole thing more energy than you'd expect from a short OVA tie-in. It's a specific nostalgia artifact — not deep, not trying to be — but as a curiosity piece blending Western and Japanese tokusatsu sensibilities around a familiar franchise, it earns its runtime.
