Midnight Sleazy Train
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Running his family's three-generation railway line, Tetsuo Amano watches it slowly die. Ridership is down, the company is bleeding money, and closure feels inevitable. Then one night on the last run, he witnesses something unexpected happening between anonymous passengers in the dark — and instead of looking away, he sees a business opportunity. What follows is Tetsuo quietly converting the Momokawa line's midnight train into something considerably less official after hours. This 3-episode OVA from T-Rex, based on a visual novel, works better than it has any right to because it actually gives its lead character a legible motivation. Preserving a family legacy through increasingly questionable means is a surprisingly grounding premise for the genre. The urban nightlife setting gives it a distinct atmosphere — neon-lit stations, late-night commuters, the particular loneliness of a city that keeps moving even when you feel stuck. Don't go in expecting deep drama, but there's more narrative scaffolding here than most entries in the genre bother to build. If you've watched Shin Saishuu Chikan Densha or Chikan Densha: Iyarashii Koui and appreciated that they at least tried to establish a setting and cast before moving forward, this original installment is worth tracking down as the one that started the series. It's grounded in a specific place and a specific desperation, which makes it feel less anonymous than comparable OVAs.
