Episode Context

Coming off the lighter, more comedic episode 21 where Godai dealt with a stray kitten, episode 22 marks a tonal pivot by putting Kyoko's commitment to Maison Ikkoku directly in question for the first time. This installment establishes a mini-arc centered on familial interference, leading directly into episode 23's continuation of her mother's schemes. At just under a quarter of the way through the 96-episode run, this is an early but significant test of the bonds forming at Ikkoku, particularly the unspoken connection between Kyoko and Godai.
