Nanoha series have been dark in the past, complete with callous sociopathic mad scientists experimenting on children. I think this is the darkest depiction they've had so far.

Episode Context

Episode 3 introduced the chance meeting between Shiina Kuze and Towa Yorumi, and this episode deepens their secret friendship while revealing the personal history behind Towa's anti-Diaboli resolve. That completes the early character setup. Episode 5 then moves the EXCEEDS frontline team into an overseas progenitor-extermination operation that leads to an unexpected encounter with the Diaboli Slayers.
