This is the series finale, making it the culmination of every conflict, revelation, and relationship developed since Episode 1. The four preceding episodes have steadily escalated the supernatural threat surrounding Ai and deepened the bond between her and Akitoshi, and this episode is where those threads converge. There is no next episode to set up — the weight here is on resolution, for better or worse.
