Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Meet Aladdin: a cheerful kid with a flute that houses a giant blue djinn, who has no idea how the world works. He's a Magi, one of a handful of magicians powerful enough to literally shape nations, but he'd rather just make friends and eat food. His first real friend is Alibaba, a street-smart guy who talks big about conquering a dungeon but is mostly just trying to survive. Together with Morgiana, a former slave with terrifying leg strength, the three of them start tackling these massive tower-like labyrinths that have appeared across the land, each one hiding a djinn and enough treasure to build an empire. The whole thing draws heavily from Arabian Nights: the names, the setting, the mythology, and it actually does something interesting with it. The magic system revolves around djinns bonding to metal vessels, and the political side of things gets more layered than you'd expect from a shounen. Characters who seem like simple archetypes early on develop real complexity over the 25 episodes. The vibe is closest to something like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood in how it balances lighthearted adventure with weightier themes about power, inequality, and what it means to be a good ruler. If you liked The Seven Deadly Sins or Black Clover but wanted tighter worldbuilding and a setting that isn't generic medieval Europe, this is worth your time. A-1 Pictures handled production, and the animation holds up well, especially during dungeon sequences.
