Lunatic Night
Oshimeter
Synopsis
One man, two women, and a catgirl — that's basically all that's left of humanity. Their job? Repopulate the planet. That's the entire premise of Lunatic Night, a 3-episode OVA from 1996 that takes the post-apocalyptic survival setup and plays it completely straight-faced while being utterly ridiculous about it. Kanzaki is the last guy on Earth, alongside Kuaru, Karura, and their catgirl companion, and yes, repopulation is literally their daily mission. But there's a wrinkle — other species have moved in and claimed territory, so the group also has to fight back. The way they fight back is... also sex. Hence the 'sex-battles,' which is exactly what it sounds like and somehow funnier than it has any right to be. The whole thing leans hard into parody, poking fun at both the hentai genre and post-apocalyptic survival tropes simultaneously. The tone is comedic throughout — this isn't trying to be Urotsukidōji: Legend of the Overfiend or anything with serious narrative weight. If you've seen something like La Blue Girl and appreciated when these older OVAs got genuinely weird and self-aware about their own absurdity, Lunatic Night scratches a similar itch. It's lo-fi 90s animation, a premise that commits fully to its own joke, and a runtime short enough that it never overstays its welcome. Niche, dated, and absolutely aware of how ridiculous it is.
