To be honest, I've never seen the Lucky Star anime before, so the OVA was my very first introduction to it. For someone who hasn't watched the main series, I actually had a pretty good time and laughed at a few of the stories.

So, I'd say you don't necessarily have to watch the whole anime to enjoy it; you can still get some good laughs out of it, and it's a very light watch. The animation—meaning the visuals—isn't the best, but that's understandable since it came out back in 2008, if I'm not mistaken.
