La Blue Girl Returns
Oshimeter
Synopsis
As heir to the Miroku clan, teenage ninja Miko Mido carries the complicated responsibility of brokering peace between humans and the Shikima, a demon race with very specific appetites. That alone is a lot to manage. Now a new faction has entered the picture: the Mahoroba, a race of butterfly-demons who want to kidnap Miko and her sister to get their hands on the seal case controlling the Shikima. Their endgame is something called the Shikima Brain, a legendary place said to grant power over the entire universe. Stakes don't get much higher than that. This is a 4-episode OVA from 2001 by Arms, based on the manga, and it leans fully into its blend of supernatural action, ninja clan politics, and explicit content. The tone balances demon-realm mythology with dark humor, so it never takes itself so seriously that it becomes a slog. If you're familiar with Urotsukidōji: Legend of the Overfiend or Demon Beast Invasion, you already know the territory: this sits in that same corner of supernatural horror and eroticism, though La Blue Girl has a lighter, more action-adventure energy underneath it all. Bible Black fans looking for something with more plot threading through it might also find it interesting. It's a niche watch for sure, but within that niche it does exactly what it sets out to do.

Watching Miko protect her sister from the demons made me happy because it shows she cares about something besides just fighting and getting into trouble
Using her body as a weapon is still the wildest thing about this show, and the Mahoroba demons are much creepier than the old villains, even if the plot is just as chaotic
Miko getting caught in those tentacles is such a classic La Blue Girl moment and the animation for the Shikima magic looks way better than I remembered from the older stuff
Those Mahoroba butterfly things are actually terrifying and the way they cornered Miko in the beginning really set a dark tone for this new series
Missing Miko and her weird needle hair tricks was the main reason to watch this and seeing her back in action against those butterfly demons was a total blast
The opening scene with the butterfly demons and the sister was a total gut punch and it makes you realize how high the danger is now
I really missed this series and the return doesn't disappoint because the Mahoroba are such distinct villains compared to the usual fodder Miko deals with. The lore about the Shikima Brain adds a layer of mystery that was not there previously, and seeing the seal case become the center of the conflict makes every fight feel more important than ever
You might think it is just the usual stuff but the way the demons use their powers to trap Miko is actually pretty clever and dark
Having the villains want to rule the entire universe by finding some brain in another dimension is a bit much but it works for this kind of story
The Mahoroba are much more aggressive this time around and seeing them go after the seal case right away really sets a fast tone
Those Mahoroba demons ambushing the sisters in the woods was pretty intense and the art style has that gritty look from the older OVAs
You can tell the animation budget went into that first encounter with the Mahoroba and it looked way better than the old series
That forest fight was such a rush and it really reminded me why I liked the first show so much, Miko using her ninja arts was so fast and cool
I am so glad Miko is back because those butterfly demons are actually creepy and the way they tried to corner her in the woods made me jump
The concept of the Shikima Brain sounds like some weird sci-fi twist for a ninja show but it makes the stakes feel a lot bigger than just fighting random monsters
Everything about the Shikima Brain sounds so random and then they just throw in those Mahoroba demons for no reason
Miko using her own body as a weapon against those Mahoroba demons is still the most bizarre thing I have ever seen in a ninja anime
The animation is definitely dated, but Miko Mido being a sexy ninja is such a classic setup for this show
Those butterfly demons are actually terrifying but then the tentacle stuff starts and everything gets weird
I really forgot how wild this old school stuff was and witnessing that needle trick again is just crazy
