A perfect introduction. Kaoru's lonely transfer student life shifts when he discovers Sentarō drumming to Moanin' in that basement. The moment jazz hits his classical ears, everything changes. Watanabe masterfully sets up a friendship built on rhythm and soul. Hooked instantly.

Sentaro's energy is strong and a bit intimidating at first. The jazz music stands out and drives the scene. It's worth checking out for the fresh setting and relatable characters.

The starting of Sentaro and Nishimi felt natural yet funny to watch. The jazz, I know it must be the starter of something even much bigger later on in this anime. I BET two of them will make such a great combo. Go go pianist x drummer bromace! 😎

This first episode was very solid. Animation, music and pacing were all good. The story is a little a cliche, but I'm sure the Jazz is the key element of changing the standard transfer/bullying element that so many other school drama's use heavily.

The 1960s setting and the immediate shift from sterile classical music to the raw energy of jazz is electric. Kaoru’s transition from a lonely, anxious transfer student to being captivated by Sentaro’s drumming is beautifully directed. It’s a soulful, atmospheric start

This episode has a really nice vibe honestly. The setting feels fresh, and the jazz music stands out immediately. Kaoru feels awkward but relatable. Sentaro’s energy is strong and a bit intimidating at first. The rooftop scene is simple but memorable.

That first jam session hits DIFFERENT—jazz isn’t just background here, it drives everything. Kaoru and Sentaro’s clash-turned-connection feels raw and real. It starts a bit slow socially, but once the music kicks in, you’re locked 🎷

EPISODE CONTEXT

As episode one of twelve, 'Moanin'' is purely foundational — it establishes Kaoru's emotional baseline of isolation and introduces the two people who will reshape his world, Sentarou and Ritsuko. Every relationship dynamic the season will explore begins here, and the episode deliberately plants the seed that music, specifically jazz, will be the catalyst for transformation. What follows will build directly on these first impressions as the trio's bonds deepen and complicate.
