Kedamono-tachi no Sumu Ie de

Synopsis
Family, in any meaningful sense, has never been something Arata Asaoka has truly had. He's an illegitimate child living under the same roof as his biological father and older brother, both of whom treat him like something scraped off their shoes. He smiles at strangers, keeps his head down, and quietly survives a household that feels more like a prison than a home. Then he meets Koharu, and for the first time, he has a reason to think about a future beyond just enduring the present. This 2-episode OVA from 2015 is adapted from a visual novel, and it carries that DNA — heavy on internal monologue, emotionally loaded, and focused on one guy's complicated inner world rather than big dramatic set pieces. The tone is somber and grounded, centering on familial dysfunction and what it does to a person over years of quiet suffering. If you've seen Yosuga no Sora and appreciated how it handled difficult home dynamics wrapped in a slow-burn romance, there's overlap here in atmosphere. It's not a feel-good story, but it's not gratuitous either — the drama feels rooted in something real. Fair warning: it's short, so don't expect a sprawling character arc. Think of it as a compact, melancholy slice of one person's breaking point and the small flicker of hope that shows up just in time.
