Synopsis

Legendary blades from Japan's past are reborn as pretty warriors and fight time-traveling enemies to protect the past. That's the setup for Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu, and honestly, the premise alone would be enough to get me curious — but it's the execution that makes it worth your time. The year is 1863, right in the middle of the Bakumatsu period when Japan was tearing itself apart. Izuminokami Kanesada and Horikawa Kunihiro are Touken Danshi, legendary swords given human form by a master called Saniwa. Their job is straightforward: stop the Time Retrograde Army from rewriting history. They're joined by a full squad — Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki, Yagen Toushirou, Tonbokiri, and Tsurumaru Kuninaga — forming the Second Unit. Early on, they intercept an operation in Edo, and from there the stakes just keep climbing. This is a ufotable movie, so the animation is genuinely gorgeous. The fight choreography has that fluid, weighty feel the studio is known for — think Demon Slayer-level production values applied to samurai combat. There's real personality in the action too, not just flashy moves. If you liked the historical drama of Hakuouki or the over-the-top warrior energy of Sengoku Basara, this hits a similar sweet spot. Fans of Drifters will also find the time-manipulation angle familiar. Between the fights, there's a quieter thread about identity — what does it mean to be a weapon given a soul? The movie doesn't belabor the point, but it's there, giving the action something to land on.
