Karma Saiyuki

Mayuko, Izumi, and Usagi — three women with suspiciously familiar names — are on a road trip through a world that vaguely resembles the classic Chinese epic Journey to the West, except everyone's female, the art leans heavily into exaggerated character designs, and the whole thing is absolutely not suitable for work. That's the setup for this single-episode OVA from 2007, and it commits to its bit pretty thoroughly. The trio rolls into a city that seems almost too nice — great food, beauty treatments, the works — and discovers the hospitality is all run by androids who've been treated pretty badly by their owners. So naturally, our heroines decide to help fix them, using whatever abilities they happen to have. It's a strange blend of parody adventure, light sci-fi, and adult content, and the comedy mostly comes from how earnestly it plays the Journey to the West angle while clearly not taking itself seriously at all. If you've seen something like Mahou Shoujo Ai or Futabu and know what you're getting into with this genre, this scratches a similar itch — short, silly, and self-aware about what it is. It's one episode, based on a manga, and it doesn't overstay its welcome. Just know going in that the parody framing is genuine — there's actual comedic effort here alongside everything else.
