The Maiden Diaries
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Once a revolutionary living large — money, wine, the finest company Europe had to offer — Foster is now broke and disgraced, taken in by Dred Burton, a railroad tycoon who has some murky history with Foster's past that neither of them is rushing to explain. In exchange for a roof over his head, Foster's new job is training high-class prostitutes for Burton's establishment, where he meets a cast of very different women — clumsy Leese, the eager Aya, gentle Ren, and the composed Clair. Each one pulls him further into this new world while he's still trying to figure out what happened to his old one, including a lost love he can barely piece together. The late 19th-century European setting gives the whole thing a period drama feel — candlelit rooms, class tensions, that kind of atmosphere — which makes it stand out from the usual. The mystery threading through Foster's past gives the story more structure than you'd expect, with the romance and intrigue genuinely connected rather than just tacked on. If you've watched Square of the Moon or Angel Core and appreciated when the plot actually does something interesting between scenes, this scratches a similar itch. It's a 5-episode OVA from 1998 adapted from a visual novel, so the pacing is compact and focused. Worth a look if you want something with a bit of historical texture and actual character dynamics behind it.
