As the series premiere, this episode exists entirely in setup territory, there is no preceding episode to reference, and everything here is designed to establish who Chihiro is before the world begins to test him. The bond forged between Chihiro and Kunishige in these early scenes carries the emotional weight that subsequent episodes will draw from heavily.
