Released in 2017, Studio Graphinica kicks off this dark, high-stakes battle royale with a premiere that masterfully subverts expectations and establishes a cutthroat world. In "Even Boars May Become Pigs After Seven Generations," the narrative introduces us to the brutal rules of the Juuni Taisen, a deadly tournament held once every twelve years where warriors representing the Chinese Zodiac must slaughter each other until only one survivor remains. The spotlight falls heavily on Inounoshishi, the arrogant and highly trained Warrior of the Boar, who carries the immense pressure of her father’s legacy as the previous tournament's victor. The episode excels in its psychological profiling, building up Boar's calculated tactics and deadly history, only to throw her into a chaotic, sudden first engagement that completely shatters her assumptions. It’s a stylish, tense, and unpredictable start to a deadly game

Episode Context

Juuni Taisen opens with a premise that demands your attention: twelve warriors representing the Chinese zodiac gather for a death match, and the show wastes no time establishing its ruthless tone. The first episode centers on the Boar warrior, grounding the battle royale concept in genuine character drama before the carnage begins. Expect sharp tension built through strategic dialogue and the suffocating weight of familial legacy. The pacing is deliberate, world-building and backstory earn their space alongside bursts of sudden, violent confrontation that signal exactly how unforgiving this tournament will be. Moral ambiguity runs thick here; there are no clear heroes, only combatants with complicated reasons for fighting. The animation from Graphinica leans into stylized action with a dark, atmospheric palette. This premiere sets a confident, brutal foundation and makes one thing clear: no one is safe.
