"Japan, Our Homeland" unfolds in the spring of 1956, a decade after the Pacific War's conclusion. The story centers on an elementary school in Kiba, downtown Tokyo, where a new teacher, Rieko Sakamoto, begins her assignment. Simultaneously, the sixth-grade class welcomes a transfer student, Shizu Miyanaga, from Kobe. Shizu is a bright and attractive girl with aspirations of becoming a singer. Her athletic prowess and academic abilities quickly make her the focal point of the class. Akira, the class president and the son of a joiner, finds himself drawn to Shizu, developing a special feeling for her as they navigate the challenges and joys of their young lives in a recovering Japan.
