Houkago 2: Sayuri
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Working as a high school janitor, Ryuichi is bad at his job and about to get fired. That setup alone tells you this isn't going to be a feel-good story. Based on a visual novel and produced by Nihikime no Dozeu, this 2008 single-episode OVA leans hard into dark, uncomfortable territory — the kind of content that sits in the same space as titles like Discipline or Bible Black. If those names mean something to you, you already know what you're getting into here. The premise revolves around Ryuichi's deteriorating situation at the school and an encounter that sets the tone for everything that follows. The animation holds up reasonably well for its era, and the pacing doesn't waste time establishing its atmosphere. This isn't something you'd recommend to someone looking for emotional nuance or redemption arcs — the story goes to genuinely disturbing places and doesn't soften them. If you've watched Night Shift Nurses and appreciated how that series committed to its bleak framing without flinching, there's a similar energy here. It's a short watch at one episode, so the story moves quickly. Just go in knowing the content is intentionally provocative and ethically dark by design. Not for everyone, clearly — but if you know the genre and you're curious about this corner of it, it does what it sets out to do.
