Somehow, the maintenance worker fixing the lights becomes the most sought-after person in the building — and not because he's great with a wrench. Jokuana is a 2-episode OVA from 2007 set inside a bustling news studio, where aspiring anchor Mayu Yokoyama is trying to build a career while navigating a workplace full of people with very different priorities. When Kazuya, the studio's resident fix-it guy, steps in to get her out of a bad situation with a shady producer, things get complicated fast — mostly because his attention doesn't stay focused on her for long. The studio backdrop actually works here. There's a specific energy to the setting that keeps it from feeling like a generic backdrop, and the character dynamics have a bit more texture than you'd expect from something this short. Mayu has actual ambition driving her, which gives the story a thread worth following between scenes. If you've watched Joshiochi!: 2-kai kara Onnanoko ga... Futtekita!? and appreciated how a quirky premise can carry a hentai OVA further than expected, this has a similar quality. Fans of Shikisoku Zekuu who like some character personality alongside the content will find it familiar ground. It's a short watch — two episodes, in and out — adapted from a visual novel, so the storytelling is tighter than most entries in the genre. Nothing groundbreaking, but if you want something with a consistent setting and characters who feel like they exist for reasons beyond the obvious, Jokuana does that reasonably well.
