Positioned at roughly the one-sixth mark of the full 75-episode run, Episode 13 bridges the preparation phase from Episode 12's team match setup into the highly anticipated direct confrontation with Akira in Episode 14. It functions as essential emotional groundwork, ensuring the upcoming clash carries real psychological stakes rather than being a simple board game. This is a turning-point episode in Hikaru's early development as a player who is beginning to own his journey rather than be carried along by circumstance.
