Synopsis
In 2019, following an uprising in the USA and a subsequent global nuclear war, humanity was decimated by a catastrophe called "The Maelström." A half-century after this cataclysmic event—to preserve humankind—the World Health Organization (WHO) has progressively assimilated worldwide political power and completely redefined society: people are now considered public resources and are guaranteed a happier life. The heightened development of medicine, nanomachine technology, and augmented reality promote this greater devotion to human health. Suffocated by the excessive kindness of Japanese society, high school student Miach Mihie decides to oppose the societal values she considers dehumanizing before the health implant surveillance system WatchMe activates itself the day she turns 18. Miach plans to kill herself with two of her friends, Tuan Kirie and Cian Reikadou. However, Cian betrays the pact in disagreement with Miach's intentions, allowing Tuan to survive her suicide attempt, unlike Miach, who is declared dead. Thirteen years later, now a high-ranking inspector of Helix—an organization affiliated with WHO to monitor military conflicts—Tuan is sent back to Japan after her drug smuggling activities in the Niger warzone are discovered by senior Helix inspector Oscar Stauffenberg. On her first day back to the country she tried running away from, thousands of people simultaneously commit suicide. Tuan is now in charge of investigating this wave of mass suicide and exposing the terrorist organization behind the unprecedented attack.

This movie is certainly a hidden gem with using medical technology in an authoritative way. The animation was very nice, even if some 3D scenes might be distracting, they still blend fine. I’m going to check out more stories from Project Itoh now, so glad I found this film.
The movie presents a beautiful future where disease, crime, and suffering have almost disappeared, but beneath that perfect surface is a society that has sacrificed individuality and freedom.
La película es demasiado buena y me sorprendió gratamente. Expone dilemas filosóficos de la más pura naturaleza humana. Lo primero que pensé es que si esta el libro "mundo feliz" de Aldous Huxley tuviera una secuela, sería esta película. La historia se enmarca en una sociedad futurista donde Japón (porsupuesto) ha liderado un desarrollo tecnológico de la neurociencia que lleva al cuidado individual y de los demás, creando así una sociedad pacífica y aparentemente feliz. La protagonista y la antagonista cuestionan ese sistema y lo contraponen a la verdadera naturaleza humana aludiendo, como muchos otros grandes pensadores y pensadoras, la culpa a la conciencia, al dolor. El final me gustó mucho, es totalmente diferente a lo que se espera de una historia que de una manera u otra busca la salvación de la humanidad. La música también es preciosa y muy adoc a cada escena, los sonidos de las pisadas, las charlas y en general la calidad audiovisual es muy detallada, el diseño de los escenarios es hermoso y lleno de minuiciosos detalles, como el hecho de que cada una de las alfombras en la escena del tejado tiene su propio patrón. Una joya que alude al despertar de la conciencia pero no creo que sea una película para todos, es bastante cruda y compleja.
This was an interesting movie. I enjoyed the mystery and nuance of what makes life, life. Though, some moments felt forced from them telling rather than showing us what's happening which makes me think of this as a book rather then a movie. Miach is also very interesting as she is clearly someone manipulative but loved dearly. Also, Tuan's dad is jumping sharks man. [6.79/10]
A medical utopia with total control from birth. After inexplicable suicides, Tuan faces her past. The film reveals a powerful truth: even if we dream of a perfect, healthy world, humanity will always fight for free will, choosing to feel and be free over being dominated.
