Synopsis

In a shift away from Karasuno, the spotlight lands on Nekoma, and it's through the most chaotic new recruit imaginable. Lev Haiba is a half-Russian, half-Japanese first-year who's tall enough to be a legitimate threat at the net but can barely receive a ball without tripping over himself. He walks in calling himself the ace, which is a bold move when you can't even sync with your setter. That setter, Kenma Kozume, is basically forced to figure out how to work with this unpolished giant when their coach throws Lev into a practice match against Kunihira Senior High. Kenma, who already treats volleyball like a chore he's too talented to quit, now has to deal with a guy who has all the raw ability and none of the fundamentals. This OVA is a single episode from Production I.G, set firmly in the Haikyuu universe but shifting the lens away from Karasuno to explore Nekoma's internal growing pains. The appeal here is watching an established team figure out how to absorb someone who disrupts their rhythm, and the comedy that comes from that friction. It's light, character-driven, and gives you a better sense of the rivals you'll see again in the main series. If you liked the team chemistry stuff in Kuroko's Basketball or the way Slam Dunk handled raw talent clashing with experienced players, this hits a similar note. Short, fun, and worth your time if you're already invested in Haikyuu's world.

when it comes to the haikyuu verse, the thing with special episodes is that you're presented with a lot of details you won't find in their full length series. i adore how this episode shows more of the world that nekoma lives in and the characters from the school too
