Episode Context

Coming directly off the emotionally heavy Mitsuba Arc (episodes 86-87), which explored grief and sacrifice within the Shinsengumi, episode 88 functions as a deliberate comedic palate cleanser, a standalone breather that lets the cast reset. This is a common Gintama structural rhythm at this stage of the series, alternating between serious arcs and comedy-driven standalones. Sitting at roughly the midpoint of the 201-episode run, the show continues building out its ensemble dynamics before moving into its next narrative arc.
