📖 SYNOPSIS
Hiroshi Tanaka lives in Yamato, a city where ancient mystical traditions sit uneasily alongside modern life. He's just a regular guy until he starts manifesting supernatural abilities he can't explain — and then Ayaka shows up. She's part of a hidden society of people with similar powers, and she pulls Hiroshi into a world he didn't know existed beneath the surface of his city. Factions are quietly fighting over control of Yamato's mystical energies, and Hiroshi's newfound abilities put him right in the middle of it whether he wants to be there or not.
This movie comes from Studio Meditation With a Pencil, and the animation is genuinely striking — they blend traditional hand-drawn work with digital effects in a way that gives the whole thing a dreamlike, layered quality. The power system draws from ancient mythology rather than the usual shonen playbook, which makes the supernatural elements feel grounded in something deeper. And the soundtrack is the kind that sticks with you after the credits roll, really carrying the emotional weight of the story.
The tone leans heavily emotional and introspective. If you liked the way Angel Beats! handled identity and loss, or the stylish faction dynamics in Akudama Drive, this hits a similar space but through a fantasy lens. It's adapted from a book, and you can feel that — the world-building has a density to it that rewards paying attention. At around movie length, it doesn't overstay its welcome. Worth your time if you're in the mood for something contemplative with a mythological edge.
