Synopsis

Beneath an eternal rainbow that never moves, never fades, and apparently has a purpose, a small coastal town holds something called a 'Gift,' a once-in-a-lifetime magical wish that can be granted between two people who share a deep bond, and it's this magic that shapes the world Haruhiko calls home. That's already an interesting setup on its own, but then his non-blood-related sister Riko shows up after years apart and enrolls at his school, and suddenly the town's magic feels a lot more personal. Add in his childhood friend Kirino, who's been around the whole time, and you've got the classic situation where someone has to figure out where their heart actually sits. Gift: Eternal Rainbow is a 12-episode TV series from 2006 based on a visual novel, and it carries that era's DNA: harem-adjacent, school setting, emotionally sincere in ways that occasionally catch you off guard. The 'Gift' mechanic gives the romance a distinct edge; it's not just feelings, it's a choice with weight behind it. The tone shifts between warm slice-of-life comedy and genuinely tender drama without feeling jarring. If you liked Da Capo II or Tayutama: Kiss on My Deity, this fits right into that same emotional register. It's not trying to reinvent anything, but if you want a quietly romantic story with a soft fantasy hook and real emotional stakes underneath, this one delivers.

That was a pleasant, heartwarming way to finish the series. I think that was already to be expected, but it's still a treat to watch. What really shined through was the maturity of the cast, as they tried to understand each other's circumstances and make ammends with what they did wrong. As I said before, I truly appreciate that in its last few epidodes it cast away the typical things that we find from a show in this genre in exchange for a stronger narrative and character development. It gave the story more weight and it concluded better than anyone thought it could. Anyways, in the technical aspect, the art and animatiom is above average, sometimes leaping in quality at certain instances. The music was good enough, but mostly improves during important moments of the chapter. The meat though is the cast, they're really lovable and colorful, and the progress of their relationships is usually the highlight whenever they are together. All I can say is, this is a fun watch; very basic, but full of heart. Highly recommend if you are just starting your list. Put this on top and you won't regret it.

And we finally get an explanation on how the plot device came about, and that had more personal connection with the main protagonist than I presumably thought. But the highlight here is the sheer determination of our hero in trying to save his loved one's life and welfare. That's how you do a penultimate episode, although the consequences of his actions might be left in the air on the finale. Anyways, I am really looking forward to see how they would wrap this up, I am sure they can pull something up their sleeves or two for the ending.

Unlike earlier episodes, there is no humor in this one but just pure, unadulterated drama. It's the fallout from the climatic moment in the previous chapters, and we thought these characters wouldn't take it that hard, I guess we're wrong. This was also the first time we see the plot device work but not in a positive manner, in fact, it was actually disturbing to see it function that way. These are possibly the darkest moments in the series, but in sense, this also seem to be setting up something big at the conclusion of this anime. Let us see if they can pull it off, I reserve my judgement for that.

As expected, events from the previous episode caused some commotion between characters, but it escalated quickly right after some serious revelations afterwards. It's the first major conflict in the series, right at the anime's last remaining outings. They really are reserving the best for last I guess. But the most intriguing part is the plot device getting some major involvement in the story, now this is something to watch out for. Things are going to get more interesting from now on until the finale, time to really tune in.

The show is keenly aware how weird the main couple's relationship is, and it comes to head in this episode. The thing is, the story goes out of its way to explain why it's not much of an issue, the concern is more on who gets affected if they become official. Anyways, just like last time, the initial part was just humorous moments and the second has all the drama. In the end though, one extremely important event happens that would probably change the trajectory of the plot for the remainder of the series. We are going places now, let see if the ride gets bumpy from here on out.

We got some major character development here from our main protagonist no less. The first half was really hilarious, especially the chase sequence around the setting. But the second half was much more serious, or at least the subject it's trying to highlight. Good thing the series don't delve too deep into this stuff. And speaking of which, it's kind of refreshing that the show itself is trying to shed off most of the fanservice in favor of improving the narrative. That alone merits the viewers diligence in following the story. Halfway through the runtime, it just keeps improving, tuning in for the next episode.

I admire the fact that the main protagonist acknowledges how awkward his position is and his determination to rectify this mistake. We also get to see how much his relationship has progressed over the course of the series and how it affects other characters that have vested interest in him. Which brings us to the fake plot device and how it became the cause of mischief to its users. What a curious situation; in the first multipart mini-arc we have a case that is directly connected with our hero, needing him to go on a quest in search of the source. Really exciting stuff, looking forward to see the resolution of this chapter.

Typical romantic drama, but with a twist and a lot of humor in between. It is actually the first time we have seen the plot device in action and how it affects the people in this setting. On the other hand, it's really nice to know more about these characters and background, they connect more with the viewers that way. So I assume that's how we proceed from now on, we're having the spotlight on one individual per episode. That's interesting, I wonder who's next?
