Gakuen Shinshoku: XX of the Dead

Houichi Matsubara is just a regular high school student when winter arriving at his school brings something a lot worse than cold weather. An outbreak hits his school, and suddenly he and a handful of friends and teachers are locked inside the building, trying to figure out what these things are and how to survive them. That's the setup — a contained survival horror story with nowhere to run and no real answers about what's happening outside the walls. Being based on a visual novel by Syoku, the story leans into character dynamics and slow-burn tension rather than pure action, which gives it a different texture than you might expect. The horror feels grounded in the early stretch — it's the creeping dread of not knowing what you're dealing with that does most of the heavy lifting.
