Episode Context

Positioned almost exactly at the midpoint of the 51-episode run, 'Heart of Steel' arrives directly after the harrowing Lab Five arc, serving as a necessary decompression point where the brothers must process what they've learned and endured. It pivots the series from external conflict to internal reckoning, forcing Edward and Alphonse to confront questions about trust, identity, and purpose that will define the trajectory of the second half. The character work laid down here, particularly around Alphonse's existential doubts, becomes foundational for the escalating stakes ahead.
