Under a stark, starry sky, a creaking windmill stands as a backdrop for battle. Metode exhales mist into the cold air, his face grim, before black, bird-like wings unfurl behind him. He takes to the air as Stark engages Revolter, a multi-limbed demon, below. The fight starts with an immediate clash, sparks flying as weapons connect.

Revolter's many blades are a whirlwind, pushing both Metode and Stark back. Metode deflects a volley of dark feathers, but the demon's attacks send him spiraling downwards, his wings breaking. Stark is likewise sent flying, his axe knocked away, as Revolter unleashes a powerful, glowing assault. The demon is clearly superior, relentless in its offense.

With Metode struggling to defend, Stark makes a desperate choice. He struggles to rise, declaring, 'I only have one option.' He lunges, his axe clashing, but takes a brutal hit, a blade impaling his chest. He falls, gravely wounded, his sacrifice seeming to be in vain, as Revolter prepares a killing blow.

Metode observes Stark's fall, initially frustrated, but then realizes the intent behind the action. He intercepts Revolter's final attack, creating a powerful explosion that fells the demon. Yet, Revolter is not truly defeated; he taunts Metode, revealing a cruel deception, involving a seemingly innocent child who is in fact a demon accomplice. This twist throws Metode's understanding of the battle, and humanity, into doubt.

Metode is impaled, shielding the false child, a move he immediately regrets as the illusion drops. He flashes back to a younger Frieren at a funeral, mourning a kind comrade. Frieren remarks on the fragility of kind mages, stating, 'It's the same in every era. Kind mages always lead the shortest lives.' She dismisses Metode as an 'unpleasant man' without kindness, a comment that clearly stung him then and now.

Despite his grievous wounds, Metode struggles to his feet, defiantly stating that he's known only one other fool willing to die for strangers. Stark, also injured, rises, his spirit unbroken. Metode, acknowledging Stark's tenacity, declares they will plunge into the jaws of death together, for the catharsis of survival. It's a dark sort of hope, but hope nonetheless.

Fern, separated from the others, flies through a magical mist created by the demon Macht, which can detect mana. She struggles to land an attack, as Macht uses the fog's properties to her advantage, creating illusions and obscuring movement. Fern analyzes her opponent's combat style, noting the lack of bloodlust, a peculiar observation for a demon. She adapts her strategy, eventually overcoming Macht's deceptive tactics and defeating her.

Back at the windmill, Metode delivers a final, devastating blow to Revolter, who disintegrates into dust. Gravely wounded, Metode stands, reflecting on the demon's fatal assumption about human weakness. He asserts that humans possess a tenacity Revolter could not comprehend, and that even without his blades, he was never truly disarmed. He counts the remaining demons, his resolve firm.

In the aftermath, Metode and Stark, both battered but alive, share a moment of understanding. Metode praises Stark's surprisingly sharp actions and acknowledges a debt. He then announces his intention to join Frieren's party, his earlier resolve deepened by the battle. He engages in a wry exchange with Stark, playfully asserting his place as the party's 'older woman', a nod to Frieren's own role. They walk away together, an unlikely but united pair.
