This anime has a great start because it takes a unique perspective on a fantasy adventure. Instead of starting with a journey, the story begins after Frieren's group defeats the Demon King and their ten-year adventure ends.

Episode 1 of Frieren places you at the end of one journey and the beginning of another. It doesn't rely on flashy fights or dramatic stakes to lure you in, but the tragic reality of what it means to be human. If you're ready to cry and reevaluate your life, strap in for this emotional journey

The first episode of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is already unique, beginning where most fantasy stories do: at the end. It doesn't just talk about the hero's win, it's about what happens next — Time, loss, and unsaid emotions. The tempo is deliberate and relaxed, and each pause and engagement is significant. The episode is beautiful because it's human – even in a fantasy setting. At the end, it gives a feeling of sadness and wistfulness that lingers in the mind long after the film has concluded.

Episode 1 of Frieren doesn't really show flashy animation yet. Instead, it presents the end of her journey with the Hero Party. At first, this might feel boring for a first episode, and even unusual since it starts by showing the ending of an era. It doesn't really hit emotionally at first, but as you continue watching, you realize how precious that moment actually was. This episode establishes what drives Frieren's new journey: her desire to understand humans. It's a quiet but bittersweet beginning to the anime.

To be honest, I stopped watching Frieren at episode 1. Then, I tried rewatching and ended up liking it. Maybe, the pacing didn't hook me at first because the relax atmosphere didn't sit well with me in a fantasy setting. But ended up liking himmel and frieren's bittersweet love.

  • This is a great opener for an anime, I love how Frieren and the others have a very different perspective on time due to their biology of course it really makes you think is living that long really worth it if you keep burying loved ones without fully understanding them since you think everyone has the same amount of time as you do. It's like being in your early 20s without having any deaths in your family or close friends you feel immortal like you still have time but here's the thing you never know when it will come so you need to live like every day is your last.

A beginning that starts with an ending. A masterclass in storytelling that is unforgettable for all time. It perfectly setups the rest of the story while establishing the main cast's characters beautifully. 10/10 will recommend everytime.

What a stunning opener 😭✨ Frieren flips the usual fantasy ending into something deeply emotional. The quiet pacing builds a heavy realization about time and loss… and it hits HARD 💔

The atmosphere was wholesome and bittersweet. It was a bit slow paced but every scene was engaging and intriguing. Although it is the first episode, it felt like we have journeyed with them for an entire season. It gives a great start to introduce the series and continuing it.

After the Demon King falls, when the hero returns and life quietly moves on. As her companions grow old and pass, Frieren remains unchanged, only then realizing how little she understood their time together. So begins a new journey to understand those fleeting moments.

A calm, slightly melancholic opening that didn’t hook me right away, but it stuck with me. It takes its time, which works for its themes, even if it feels slow at times. Nice visuals, fitting music, and a more reflective take on fantasy.

A beautifully quiet and emotional opening. It sets a reflective tone with gentle storytelling, stunning visuals, and a calm pace that slowly draws you in. The BGM is top-tier, elevating every moment. Thoughtful and atmospheric, it feels meaningful and deeply human.

The plot is exceptionally original and beautifully crafted. The pacing may be slow for some, but it works well from a narrative standpoint, as it reflects the protagonist’s “ethereal” nature, which contrasts with all the change taking place in the world of her companions.

Ep 1 feels warm and calming, but also a bit understated. Frieren’s reaction to Himmel’s death stands out—she says she never really knew him, so she doesn’t cry at first, but later regrets it. For someone who’s lived so long, it’s surprising this realization comes so late.

At the beginning of the episode it feels kind of slow, however through simple panels and interactions, they give you all the context you may need about the world, near the end I couldn't help but cry, understanding the pain of regret and duel the protagonist felt

EPISODE CONTEXT — Post-Demon King Arc

As episode one of twenty-eight, 'The Journey's End' is the essential foundation for the entire series, establishing Frieren's emotional core and the thematic throughline of time, loss, and belated understanding that will drive every arc forward. Rather than beginning with a quest, the premiere begins after one ends—a deliberate inversion that reframes what this story is actually about. Everything that follows, from Frieren's new journey to the companions she'll meet, grows directly from the emotional seeds planted here.
