📖 SYNOPSIS
Raised together in the same apartment complex, Kousuke and Natsume were practically brought up by Kousuke's grandfather. But after the old man dies, something breaks between them — Natsume can't let go of the memories tied to that building, and Kousuke can't stand being reminded. Now the complex is scheduled for demolition, and their friendship is barely hanging on.
During summer break, Kousuke's friends drag him back to the old building to check out ghost rumors. Natsume's already there. They argue over the grandfather's camera, a storm rolls in, and when it clears — the entire apartment complex is floating in the middle of an endless ocean. No land in sight, no explanation, just a handful of kids stranded on a concrete raft that used to be home.
This is a movie from Studio Colorido, and the animation is genuinely gorgeous — the water, the light, the way the building slowly deteriorates as they drift. But the real draw is the emotional core. It's about grief, about how two people who care about each other can fumble the relationship when they're both hurting in different ways. The fantasy setup gives them no choice but to finally deal with it.
If you liked Spirited Away's sense of being trapped in a strange world, or the bittersweet emotional weight of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, this hits a similar nerve. It's a quiet, lovely film that earns its ending.
