It felt pretty grim when the group finally reached the border and saw the effects of Lucifon's power firsthand. Seeing those villagers turned into statues was a heavy way to start the episode and I think it gave Kakeru the push he needed to stop comparing himself to Takeru and start acting like a leader for Eto and the others.

I think that black mist concept is actually pretty terrifying because seeing the villagers turn into stone like that made the danger feel much closer for Kakeru and his crew

Lucifon showing his face was a letdown because his plan is just making a garden of people, but the way Kakeru eventually used his father's sword to cut through that mist was a decent payoff after all the wandering around and those girls still need to find some actual armor if they want to survive the next empire though and maybe Eto will stop being so vague

I am genuinely surprised that a show with this much fanservice actually bothered to give Kakeru a decent back story about his father Takeru. Watching him realize that his destiny is bigger than just wandering around with girls was a nice touch, even if the Lucifon scenes were a bit much for me personally. The stone stuff is still super weird though.
