Dokodemo Makibao: World Tour
Oshimeter
Synopsis
After a 30-year absence, that tiny, goofy-looking racehorse named Makibao is back, and this time instead of normal horse racing, he's traveling the world competing in... picking up trash at the beach. And carrying beer in Germany. And racing to the basement of a department store to grab the last discounted snack. That's the show. Makibao, along with his sister Makibako and their crew, globe-trots through countries participating in these absurd "everyday races" that have zero business being as competitive as they are, all while supposedly training to face his rival Cascade. The comedy leans hard into turning completely mundane situations into dramatic sporting events, which works way better than it has any right to. DLE's animation style mixes traditional and digital techniques in a way that gives everything a loose, energetic feel that fits the tone perfectly. The soundtrack pulls from both Japanese and international music traditions depending on whatever country they're visiting, which is a nice touch. You don't need to know the original Midori no Makibao manga to enjoy this — the ONA stands on its own as a comedy-first sports thing. If you liked the chaotic energy of Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi or the way Go! Go! Loser Ranger! plays with genre expectations, this scratches a similar itch. It's a shounen sports anime where the sport is "getting to the sale items first," and honestly that's more relatable than most tournament arcs.
