Synopsis
Working homicide cases that regular detectives can't crack, the kind involving something way beyond human, is how Koji, a man-demon, makes his living. When a series of brutal, inexplicable murders tears through the city, he teams up with Kyoko, a psychic with a deeply unsettling connection to death, and together they start pulling at a thread that leads somewhere genuinely dark. Their trail eventually converges on a lone woman, and what surrounds her is the kind of thing that makes you question whether solving the case is even survivable. The tone here is heavy horror with supernatural muscle, think less detective procedural, more descent into something wrong. It's a 3-episode OVA from 1999, so it moves fast and doesn't waste time on setup. If you've seen Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend or Demon Beast Invasion, you already know the creator's signature: graphic, unsettling, and genuinely committed to its horror premise rather than using it as window dressing. The lonely woman scene was way too much and the horror feels gross instead of scary most of the time
I grew up on Toshio Maeda works but this one feels even more grimey than the usual stuff, especially when Koji reveals his demon side during that fight at the end of the episode. The psychic detective vibe with Kyoko really works for me and the animation holds up for being over twenty years old but it is definitely for a specific crowd
Kyoko is a cool psychic and the way she tracks that supernatural killer through the city is pretty intense
The gore in this ova is way over the top and Maeda really loves his tentacles even if the story is thin
I was not ready for how dark the opening hunt for that monster got and Koji is such a creepy lead
It is pretty wild how much they got away with in these older OVAs and the monster attack at the end was a total gore fest that lived up to expectations
The investigation scenes have a lot of grit, and seeing how Koji interacts with the psychic Kyoko gives the whole horror setup a unique feel that stands out from typical OVA series
The lonely woman in the apartment had no idea what was coming and the monster reveal was pretty disgusting and the dark colors fit the mood perfectly
Those monster attacks are really hard to watch and the supernatural detective angle works well with the man demon powers Koji uses to fight back
I spent the whole episode wondering if Koji could actually stop that thing because the murders were getting more graphic every few minutes. The psychic girl Kyoko has such a weird vibe, and watching her and Koji walk through those crime scenes made the world feel lived in. That final reveal at the apartment made me feel so hopeless
You can really feel the tension when Koji finally tracks down the killer and the creature design for the monster is exactly the kind of nightmare fuel expected
Seeing the gruesome state of those victims left me feeling pretty unsettled and Koji being half demon makes for a cool protagonist in such a dark world
This animation has that heavy nineties horror grit and the way the psychic visions played out looked super weird and the gore was definitely over the top
That monster is absolutely brutal and the scene where it follows the trail to that lonely woman was terrifying and the classic Maeda style is all over this
I thought the way Koji transformed to hunt that monster was sick and Kyoko being a morbid psychic added such a creepy atmosphere to the whole investigation
The animation on the monster kills was genuinely disturbing and reminded anyone watching of Urotsukidoji This show is not for the weak because of how graphic that bedroom scene went
My stomach actually turned during that first murder scene and I usually like horror Koji has such a weird energy as a demon hunter and I want to see what he does next
The pacing in this is so fast because it just drops you into the murders without any warning, and Koji being a demon detective is such a great setup for a horror show
I forgot how intense these old school OVAs get with the blood and the sex That psychic lady Kyoko gives me the creeps with how she talks about death but she is a good partner
the mystery of the lonely woman and the trail of victims she left behind kept the tension high and koji is the perfect lead for this kind of dark case
