The Nightmare and the Crushing Past
The episode opens with a blur of color, then Nanoka's wide, horrified eyes. A monstrous figure, all shadowy teeth and glowing purple, reflects in her gaze, twisting her face with primal fear. "Obake," she whispers, a ghost, a demon. This visceral terror immediately gives way to a brutal memory: a crash scene, an ambulance, and firefighters pulling a small, lifeless Nanoka from a crater in the road. Blood covers her face; they say she isn't breathing.
A Facade of Normalcy
The terror subsides into the calm, ordinary morning of a Japanese suburb. Nanoka hurries down the stairs, greeting her Grandpa before pausing at an altar for her deceased parents. It is a quiet ritual, a private grief she carries into her cheerful day. Her morning is briefly interrupted by Uozumi, who offers a vile green smoothie, a moment of gentle comedy before Nanoka walks to school. Her internal monologue, however, betrays the calm: "I've died once before," she states plainly.
Whispers and the Weight of Memory
At school, Nanoka proves herself less than athletic, her friends Haruka and Yui noting her slowness. Later, in the hall, Haruka and Yui whisper with Hitomi about a shuttered shopping arcade and the strange occurrences there. They mention an accident, and Hitomi's shocked reaction hints at the unspeakable, linking it to Nanoka's parents. Nanoka recounts her own version of the accident, a first-grader caught in a cave-in, found lifeless but somehow, restored. Despite the eerie rumors, she insists on taking the shortcut through the arcade.
Stepping Through Time
Walking through the arcade with her friends, a strange sound echoes, heard only by Nanoka. A flickering light envelops her foot as she steps, and the modern street warps around her. The world shifts, revealing an older, bustling street, populated by translucent figures in traditional clothes. Her hair briefly changes, growing spiky and reddish, as confusion and shock take hold.
A World Unseen
Alone in this ancient street, Nanoka questions her surroundings, seeing only transparent people. A woman in a blood-stained kimono approaches, asking if Nanoka is human. The woman's face cracks and decays, transforming into a terrifying, demonic visage before she fully becomes a giant, dark dragon. It lunges at Nanoka, who screams and flees, narrowly escaping the beast's crushing tail.
The Onmyoji and the Ayakashi
Just as the dragon corners Nanoka, Mao, a young man with striking white and black hair, appears with a small boy, Otome. Mao quickly engages the dragon with his sword, forcing it to retreat, declaring he won't yield to Nanoka. He expertly slays the creature, reducing it to purple mist and a tiny insect-like form. Otome retrieves the insect. Then, impossibly, Otome reattaches Nanoka's severed arm, shocking her. It is then Mao delivers his pronouncement: "You're an Ayakashi, aren't you?"
A Demon's Denial
Nanoka wakes in a rustic setting, her arm bandaged but miraculously whole. She confronts Mao, demanding to know why he didn't help her sooner, enraged by his suggestion that she fight. She vehemently denies being a demon, despite his chilling explanation of her arm's instant reattachment, a clear sign of her true nature. Mao then seals the insect-like creature, a "Kotoku," into a jar, reinforcing the reality of this bizarre world.
The Glimmer of Truth
Frantic, Nanoka flees from Mao, insisting she is normal, that he and this world are "weird." She rushes back into the shopping arcade, which suddenly appears modern and familiar once more. Believing she has escaped, she then catches a glimpse of her reflection: her eyes glow red. The shock of this transformation forces a horrifying realization, one she cannot deny.
The Illusion of Safety
Nanoka wakes in her own bed, her arm miraculously unblemished, her Grandpa telling her she has a fever. Was it all a dream? The return of Uozumi with another disgusting smoothie offers a brief, comedic return to normalcy. She decides she cannot tell her Grandpa what truly happened, attempting to bury the experience.
The Unavoidable Truth
The illusion shatters as Mao, back in Nanoka's time, observes a spiritual barrier at the arcade. Nanoka herself is abruptly pulled back, her eyes glowing red again, confirming her reality. Rushing to school, she defies a truck, leaping over it with impossible grace, her eyes flashing red for her shocked friends to see. A disembodied warning from Mao echoes: her powers are dangerous. The episode ends with Nanoka back in the ancient arcade, facing the shadowy monster from her initial nightmare.
EPISODE REVIEWS

An exceptionally fresh twist on the fantasy genre! Blending classic fantasy lore with a sprawling, neon-soaked cyberpunk dystopia creates an incredible atmosphere. Veltol’s majestic aura clashing with his comedic "fish-out-of-water" struggles in a high-tech Shinjuku is phenomenal.
