QUICK TAKES

Death Note's premiere is a masterclass in tension. Light finding the notebook, testing it on criminals, and his first meeting with Ryuk sets up an insane cat-and-mouse game. The moral descent starts immediately. Iconic intro to one of the greatest psychological thrillers. 9.8/10.

light laughing and declaring himself the god of the new world right after being cornered is the most unhinged final power move and i respect it entirely even though bro got immediately humbled after. i wanted him to win so desperately and i am still sad that he didn't. one of the most PEAK endings i have ever watched. AND RYUK REALLY SAID LET ME HANDLE THIS AND WROTE HIS NAME THE ENDING WAS EVERYTHING NEAR KING BEHAVIOR LIGHT CRASHING OUT WAS PEAK CINEMA FOREVER

ryuk's closing monologue functions as a structurally perfect final framing device that returns the narrative to its original premise, a shinigami's game played purely for entertainment. the ending neither sentimentalizes the protagonist nor fully condemns him, which is the only honest resolution a story this morally complex could deliver.

Like Light, I also found myself missing L a lot, but Near and Mello also deserve praise for their contributions. Light going absolutely crazy and desperate was very uncomfortable but we all knew karma would catch up to him

Light Yagami is finally caught and exposed as Kira, but even at the end, he still sees himself as a god, too powerful to be stopped, even as everything falls apart around him. The notebook pushed him into obsession and power, as he keeps justifying everything he has done. He sacrificed so many lives along the way, including his father and colleagues, showing he has no real attachment to anyone.
The episode is quite long and heavy on explanations, which slows the pace, but it also makes everything feel more final and detailed. Even when caught, he still tries to eliminate those around him, like he would rather die than lose. Overall, it ends with the feeling that he still believes he is Kira, almost like the story could continue with him coming back.

EPISODE CONTEXT
As the 37th and final episode, "New World" is the definitive resolution to the entire series — the culmination of every chess move, betrayal, and calculated risk that has defined Death Note. It follows directly from episode 36's tense standoff between Near, the SPK, and Light's faction, where the final confrontation was set into irreversible motion. There is nothing after this — every thread the show has woven across its run lives or dies here.
