This is the series premiere, nothing precedes it. 'The Birth' exists entirely to establish Joe Shimamura's circumstances and plant the central mystery: who transformed him, and why. It feeds directly into the follow-up episode, 'The Escape,' where the broader group of cyborgs begins to take shape and the organization behind their transformation moves from background threat to active conflict.
