Crimson Wolf

Synopsis
Standing between humanity and an army of darkness are just three warriors with no real track record — and they have to pull it off at the gates of the Forbidden City. That's the setup for Hon Ran, a 1993 OVA from APPP that runs one episode and doesn't waste much of it. The story mixes martial arts combat with sorcery, and there's a love story woven through it that apparently spans centuries, which adds some weight to what could've just been a straightforward brawl. What makes it feel a little different is that it keeps one foot in real-world historical territory — the Forbidden City isn't just a cool backdrop, it actually grounds the fantasy in a way that makes the wilder elements land harder. The tone is serious throughout, no comic relief to soften things, so if you're in the mood for something that treats its premise with a straight face, this fits. It's short and dense in the way a lot of early 90s OVAs are — not a lot of hand-holding, just conflict and atmosphere. If you liked the grounded action feel of Green Legend Ran or the martial arts aesthetic of Hyakka Ryōran: Samurai Girls, this scratches a similar itch in a much more compact runtime. Worth an hour if you're into old-school action anime with a bit of mythological weight behind it.
