QUICK TAKES

I really wasn't expecting something like this. I knew it was an anime depicting ancient Japanese writers, but I didn't expect it to be like this. Mystery? Powers? All of the above! One thing to highlight is that everything in the anime works wonderfully. The visual aesthetic is gorgeous, and presenting the characters with Japanese writing stencils is brilliant. The animation and backgrounds are beautiful. The humor is a bit silly, but it's not annoying.

I’ve been rewatching this one since highschool and can’t believe i’m watching it again. The animation never fails to amaze me, you need to watch the effects and details and it’s so impressive. The dramatic background music also adds effects making the scene interesting. And I think the pacing is just right, especially the introductions of the characters for the starting episode. It was kind of funny and mixed with mystery and supernatural, I’ve been hooked ever since.

Atsushi’s rough past already makes him easy to root for 💔 but the episode keeps things fun with Dazai acting absolutely ridiculous the entire time. The mix of comedy, mystery, and action works surprisingly well ✨ and Kunikida dealing with Dazai’s chaos makes every scene even better 😂

EPISODE CONTEXT
As the series premiere of a 12-episode season, this episode carries the full weight of world-building and character introduction, establishing Atsushi's circumstances and his fateful encounter with Dazai and the Armed Detective Agency. It plants the seeds for the supernatural mystery framework that will drive the entire season. The next episode, 'A Certain Bomb,' escalates the stakes by introducing external threats that test the dynamics established here, making this a necessary foundation for everything that follows.
