Synopsis

A trio of high school guys sit around talking about girls, and somehow that's enough to carry a whole 13-episode TV series. Boys Be... follows Kyoichi Kanzaki, an aspiring artist who's slowly realizing his childhood friend Chiharu might be more than just a friend; Makoto Kurumizawa, who talks a big game about being a romance expert but keeps fumbling every situation; and Yoshihiko Kenjo, a jock who couldn't read a romantic signal if it hit him in the face. Set across a full school year, each episode kind of mirrors the season it takes place in — spring awkwardness, summer tension, autumn melancholy — which gives the whole thing a weirdly grounding rhythm. What makes it work is the honesty. These aren't smooth anime protagonists pulling off grand confessions. They're nervous, they overthink things, they misread situations constantly. It's a male perspective on high school romance that actually feels like high school romance — messy and uncertain and a little embarrassing. The tone stays light and comedic but knows when to slow down and let a quiet moment breathe. If you liked the low-key relationship dynamics in KimiKiss: Pure Rouge or the multi-character romantic tangles of Hatsukoi Limited, this hits a similar frequency, just from an earlier era. HAL Film Maker adapted it from a shounen manga, and you can feel that DNA — it's straightforward, unpretentious, and genuinely warm without trying too hard to be.
