The Closet Guitarist's Origin
Hitori Gotoh lives in profound isolation, a childhood memory of being forgotten in hide-and-seek a cruel metaphor for her existence. School days pass in solitude, her only companions automated messages. A television program, however, plants a seed of hope: music can be a path to connection. Her father's old Gibson becomes her solace, her closet a sanctuary, where she spends three years perfecting her craft. She emerges online as 'guitarhero,' celebrated by thousands, yet still entirely alone in her real life.
High School Anxieties
High school proves no different; a month passes without a single friend. Hitori observes her classmates with a desperate internal monologue, crafting elaborate fantasies of popularity. Her attempts to attract attention are clumsy and comedic: leaving CDs, wearing band merchandise, even playing death metal over the school broadcast. All her efforts backfire, solidifying her reputation as unapproachable. Bringing her guitar to school, hoping someone would notice, only reinforces her invisibility.
A Sudden Encounter
Despairing in a park, Hitori's solitude is abruptly shattered by Nijika Ijichi, a girl with an electric energy. Nijika needs a guitarist, her band's previous one having quit just before a gig. Before Hitori can articulate her fear, or even fully comprehend the situation, Nijika seizes her hand. Hitori is dragged away, her internal panic reaching new heights as she is forcibly propelled into the social nightmare she has always avoided.
Into Shimokitazawa
Nijika pulls Hitori through the bustling, vibrant streets of Shimokitazawa, a place alive with music and fashion. The sensory overload is overwhelming for Hitori, who feels like a foreign object amidst the crowds. Nijika, meanwhile, chatters happily, introducing her band, Kessoku Band, and herself as the drummer. They arrive at 'STARRY,' a dimly lit basement venue that offers Hitori a strange, closet-like comfort amidst its professional gear.
Meeting the Bassist
Inside STARRY, Hitori meets Ryo Yamada, Kessoku Band's bassist. Ryo's cool, detached gaze feels intensely scrutinizing to Hitori, making her even more uncomfortable. Nijika reassures her that this is simply Ryo's usual demeanor. The reality of standing with two actual band members in a legitimate music venue begins to sink in for Hitori. The weight of responsibility for the upcoming performance settles over her, adding to her mounting terror.
A Disastrous Rehearsal
The band's first rehearsal is a complete catastrophe. Hitori's years of isolated practice have left her utterly unprepared for the demands of playing with others. Her rhythm is erratic, her notes are missed, and her fear transforms the music into a discordant mess. Nijika and Ryo observe her with a mix of confusion and disappointment. Hitori is crushed, realizing her technical mastery means nothing without the ability to connect musically with her bandmates.
The Trash Bin and the Secret
Overwhelmed by failure, Hitori retreats, quite literally, into a trash bin in the club office. She curls into a ball of self-loathing, convinced she has ruined everything. Nijika tries to coax her out with kind words, while Ryo watches with detached amusement. While Hitori is still hiding, Nijika and Ryo casually discuss the brilliant online guitarist 'guitarhero.' Hitori recognizes herself in their words, a shocking realization, but remains too terrified to reveal her secret identity, especially when Ryo comments on 'guitarhero' lacking "soul."
The Cardboard Solution
Nijika offers Hitori a sincere pep talk, emphasizing that fun, not perfection, is the goal for their band. A creative solution emerges for Hitori's stage fright: she will perform inside a large cardboard box. The dark, enclosed space offers Hitori immense comfort, a familiar sanctuary in the daunting performance setting. A genuine sense of camaraderie begins to form as they prepare, Hitori now determined not to let these new, unexpected friends down.
The First Performance
Kessoku Band takes the stage, with Hitori tucked inside her 'Ripe Mango' box. The performance is raw and imperfect, notes are missed, but an electric rush courses through Hitori. For the first time, she feels the physical vibrations of her bandmates' instruments syncing with her own. This messy, energetic debut marks the true beginning of Kessoku Band. The small audience, perhaps confused by the guitarist in a box, nonetheless bears witness to this nascent connection.
Joining the Band, and Regret
Exhausted but exhilarated, Hitori emerges from the performance with a profound sense of accomplishment. Nijika and Ryo formally invite her to become a permanent member of Kessoku Band. In a rare burst of confidence, Hitori boldly declares she will even be able to greet her classmates by their next show. The social effort immediately drains her, however, and she scampers away into the night before they can respond. Nijika and Ryo are left amused by their strange, talented new bandmate.
