Synopsis
At just 15, former model Aia Udagawa still has the looks, but he can't escape his past, and his classmates won't let him forget it. When his school's Aoi Festival rolls around with its big Artist Contest, everyone naturally shoves him in front of the camera again. Problem is, Udagawa doesn't want to be the face — he wants to be the hands. He's quietly obsessed with makeup artistry, but he's buried that dream because he doesn't think he has the talent. His assigned stylist is Jun Sumisaki, a tall girl who hunches through the hallways trying to hide her height and covers her freckles like they're something to apologize for. What starts as an awkward forced pairing turns into something genuinely moving when Udagawa sees what everyone else misses: Sumisaki isn't someone who needs fixing, she's someone who needs a spotlight. So they flip the whole arrangement — he picks up the brushes, she steps in front of the crowd, and both of them have to fight through their own insecurities to pull it off. The vibe is warm and grounded, with A-1 Pictures bringing that visual polish you'd expect. It treats makeup as real artistry, not a punchline, and the body image stuff feels honest rather than preachy. If you liked how Smile Down the Runway handled fashion industry dreams with real emotional stakes, or how Blue Period made you care deeply about someone discovering their art, this hits a similar nerve. Fans of My Dress-Up Darling's creative partnership energy will find a lot to connect with here too, just with a more introspective edge.
